EcoVillage at Ithaca, a member of
the Ecovillage Network of the Americas, is comprised of an intentional
community and a non-profit organization. Our goal is to explore
and model innovative approaches to ecological and social sustainability.
We're creating a unique habitat which includes cohousing, organic
agriculture, an education center, and natural areas, preserving
and restoring over 80% of the land as green space. The residential
component of EcoVillage will be comprised of 3-4 tightly clustered
cohousing neighborhoods surrounding a Village Center. The First neighborhood (FROG) was completed in 1997, and the second neighborhood
(SONG) was completed in 2003. Each neighborhood comprises 30 houses and a Common House. A third neighborhood (TREE) is in its initial development stage.

| Our 176-acre site of farmland and woods overlooks
the City of Ithaca to the east and borders Coy Glen Nature Preserve
to the west. Currently, 55 acres are permanently preserved through
a conservation easement managed by the Finger Lakes Land Trust.
Less than 2 miles from Ithaca's downtown and served by the TCAT
bus system, EcoVillage aspires to integrate the best aspects
of urban and rural living. One of our non-profit organizations,
EVI Inc. owns and manages most of the land, while another, EcoVillage/CRESP,
connects the project to the academic world through Cornell's
Center for Religion, Ethics & Social Policy. Education is
an essential component of our mission - we seek to collaborate
with others in evolving sustainable social and physical systems,
and to share the lessons we are learning with others. |
Current agricultural projects include a 10 acre organic CSA
vegetable farm, a u-pick organic fruit & berry farm, and
a warm-season grasses ecosystem restoration project. |
